MACO & Licensing: The Facts
Alumni Profiles | Job Tips | Social Work Jobs | License Info | Videos Myth 1 “I thought you can’t be licensed as a social worker if you concentrate in MACO. That’s what my friend said she heard from someone in the elevator." LGSW - Licensed Graduate Social Worker • An MSW degree from this school (either as a Clinical of MACO concentrator) is full preparation for taking the LGSW examination upon graduation. LCSW – Licensed Certified Social Worker • In addition to the MSW degree (either as a Clinical or MACO concentrator) you will need two full-time years, or the equivalent, of practice under LCSW supervision. This prepares you for the LCSW examination. Myth 2 “What if I change my mind and decide to become a clinical practitioner (LCSW-C) a few years from now?”
LCSW-C – Licensed Certified Social Worker - Clinical • In order to sit for the LSCW-C examination, MACO concentrators will need six credits of advanced clinical coursework and two years of clinical practice under the supervision of an LCSW-C. • If you want to be a MACO concentrator but want to “cover your bases,” we recommend taking SWCL 700: Paradigms and SWCL 744: Psychopathology, in effect being a MACO/Clinical concentrator.
