MSW/JD Dual Degree Program Time Lines Students first start the program of one school and take classes for at least one academic year. In most cases students complete the MSW foundation or the standard first year law curriculum before taking any courses in the other school. After the first year, the student then takes the foundation or first year core classes at the other school. After spending a year in each school, students are free to mix social work and law courses together during their remaining semesters. The requirement that students complete all requirements for the MSW within four years of beginning coursework applies to dual degree students.
