Bethany R. Lee, Associate Dean for Research & Associate Professor
Dr. Bethany Lee is the Associate Dean for Research and an Associate Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. She has been on the faculty since 2007. She received her MSW and PhD from the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, where she was a student of J. Curtis McMillen (UM SSW PhD alumnus).
Her research is centered on services for youth involved in the public systems of child welfare and/or mental health. She is also interested in advanced statistical methods. She is currently working on a project funded by the Center for Medicaid Services to identify common practice elements of placement prevention and training public child welfare workers and interns on the common elements of child mental health. In addition, she leads the Maryland evaluation team for the Multi-State Child Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA) Project to improve access to community-based services for youth with mental health needs.
Dr. Lee teaches in both the MSW and Phd programs. For MSW students, she teaches a course on Research in Child Welfare and a course on the Common Elements of Child Mental Health Practice. In the doctoral program, Dr. Lee facilitates the second semester of Research Practicum. Dr. Lee enjoys working with students and helping them see the value of research in social work practice.
As a West Baltimore resident, Dr. Lee is involved in community development and advocacy efforts in her neighborhood. She volunteers at Sandtown Habitat for Humanity and is an elected representative on the Baltimore City Western District Police Community Affairs Council.
