Teach for America Program Information What is the program and how does it work? The program was developed to recruit members and alumni of Teach for America (TFA) and the Peace Corps (PC) into the Master of Social Work program at the UMB School of Social Work. Members and alumni of these two programs are considered excellent candidates to enter the helping profession of social work. They have already demonstrated an interest in working with disenfranchised and/or marginalized populations. Applicants are eligible to enter this program after having completed their commitment to TFA or PC. The application fee will be waived, and the applicant may be given up to a 2 year deferment. If you are a returning Peace Corp Volunteer, please click here for information about our Peace Corps Fellows/USA Program.
Do I have to be accepted into the School of Social Work in order to be eligible? Yes. However, you will apply to both the School of Social Work and the TFA/PC Program simultaneously.
Are there opportunities for financial support? You will be automatically considered for various merit scholarships that are available to incoming students.
The application fee will be waived, and the deferment will be considered for applicants who are accepted into the School.
Prospective applicants must complete a paper application and write a statement that includes the following information:
- Your name, address, phone number(s), email address, and any other pertinent contact information.
- Include a copy of your acceptance letter into TFA or PC, and describe where you served/will be serving and what you did/will be doing.
- The skills and experience you bring to the field of social work.
- The skills and knowledge you hope to learn at the School of Social Work.
- A description of your future goals.
- Include a copy of your current resume.
