APPLYING FOR ADMISSION

Welcome! We are excited to learn of your interest in the University of Maryland School of Social Work. You are strongly encouraged to apply online. You will find our online application process both easy and convenient.

If you have not already done so, please review our admissions catalog for more complete information on the School of Social Work and complete, detailed instructions on the application process, deadlines, etc.  For admission requirements, click here.

Please read all instructions below before beginning your online application. We suggest that you reserve at least 30 minutes to complete the online application.  

When you apply online you will create a Personal Identification Number (PIN) and Password. Your PIN and Password enable you to return to your application as many times as you wish before your final submission to the School of Social Work. You will also use your PIN and Password to track the progress of your application online.  (Please write your PIN and Password down in order to access the site at any time.)

INSTRUCTIONS/REQUIREMENTS BY APPLICATION CATEGORIES
In addition to the online application, several items are required of applicants in each admission category. Use the following address for ALL postal submissions:

All Online Applicants Must Provide:

$60 (U.S. currency), non-refundable application fee for online applicants ($80 for paper applications) made payable to the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Applications will not be reviewed until the application fee is received. You will be able to pay this fee online once you submit your online application or you may send a check or money order to the School of Social Work to the address listed above.

An official transcript from each college, university or professional school you have attended, whether or not credit was earned. An official transcript must be submitted to the School of Social Work Office of Admissions in a sealed envelope as prepared by the sending institution.

Personal Statement.  You will be asked to complete a personal statement that answers social work related questions. The Personal Statement questions can be found with the reference form links found on the next page.

Three Reference Forms.  All applicants are required to submit via postal mail three referene forms, usually including professors, employers, supervisors, professional colleagues, and community associates.  They will be asked to comment on your academic aptitude, ability to work with others, capacity for self-development, and dependability.  These references must be sealed by the writer and signed across the seal.  As with official transcripts, you will send the unopened envelopes to us at the address listed above.  Advanced Standing applicants must provide one reference from his/her field supervisor. This form is available once you click to apply.

Letter of Recommendation for Applicants Applying for Advanced Standing.  This form is to be completed and signed by the undergraduate social work department chairperson and sent to us at the address listed above.  This form is available once you click to apply.

Application for In-State Status Classification (if applicable).  Applicants who wish to claim in-state (Maryland) residency status MUST complete the status classification form. Deleware residents also qualify for in-state status.  Print and complete the form and submit it by mail to the address above.  This form is available once you click to apply.

Are You a Current or Former Member of the Peace Corps or Teach for America?  If so, Click Here for Important Information.

International Applicants:
An applicant with international education credentials must provide the School of Social Work with a document that translates the credentials into English, evaluates the degree for equivalency to degrees awarded in the United States, and
provides information to enable the interpretation of grades.  Respected sources for the required documentation include World Education Services, The Knowledge Company, and Educational Credential Evaluators.

NOTES AND REMINDERS
All application material to be submitted by mail should be addressed to the School of Social Work as noted in "Instructions and Requirements."

Please clearly identify yourself through use of your complete name and social security number where appropriate when submitting application material by mail.
