SOCIAL WORK MONTH ACTIVITIES RANGED FROM ADVOCACY TO PRESENTATIONS
Social work students and faculty from across Maryland got a jump on National Social Work Month. A number of students from the School of Social Work, along with two faculty members, joined other social work students and faculty members at the 12th Annual Social Work Student Advocacy Day on February 27 held in Maryland's capital of Annapolis.
The group met with Maryland legislators over lunch and handed them paper dolls that represented children in Maryland needing assistance. The dolls were so popular with legislators that the supply ran out.
After the lunch, a rally was held outside. The rally was led by School of Social Work Student Christina Bullman.
March is National Social Work Month and while renovations at the School prevented a lot of activities from taking place, there were efforts made to help celebrate.
Student Government Association leaders at the School spent Mondays in March in the School lobby welcoming students, faculty, staff, and visitors and offering them breakfast items.
Tote bags were distributed by the School's Alumni Association to those in attendance at a National Association of Social Workers-Maryland Chapter conference held in Baltimore.
Dean Richard Barth discussed the "Future of Social Work" at a conference in March that looked at "The Role of Social Work in the Future of Medicine." The conference was held at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Finally, several students travelled to New York City to attend the Global Social Work Student Conference on March 30. The event took place the day before the 25th Annual Social Work Day at the United Nations.
