The National Association of Social Workers-Maryland Chapter has announced their yearly awards and many with connections to the School of Social Work are among the winners.

2008 Social Worker of the Year - Dr. Peter Luongo '90
Luongo is a well-respected clinician and administrator and thrice appointed Director of the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

2008 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner - Professor Emeritus Harris Chaiklin
In his nearly 50 years as a professional social worker, Chaiklin has been on the cutting edge of some of the most important innovations in the profession and has been a scholar, teacher, and writer of great note. He writes a regular column for the Maryland Social Worker and is assembling a history of the School of Social Work in anticipation of our 50th anniversary.

2008 Educator of the Year - Professor Paul Ephross
Education has been a lifetime passion for Ephross, who has taught at the School of Social Work for 40 years. His passion for education left an indelible mark on the many students he has shepherded through social work education in a manner that has made learning an experience yielding knowledge and inspiration.

2008 Field Instructor of the Year - Liza Oktay-Hicks '01
As a School Clinician with the School Mental Health Program at the University of Maryland, Liza is responsible for providing individual mental health treatment, group counseling, and family therapy for children ranging from four to 13 years of age.

2008 MSW Student of the Year - Christy Bullman
Bullman is a tireless volunteer who is quick to seek and take on new challenges that help her grow. She developed a social work salary survey which was published and remains a reference point for the NASW-MD.
