ALUMNI ASSOCIATION LAUNCHED!
by Alethea Schmall
Assistant Director for Alumni Relations
After a year of planning and working with the Alumni Association Steering Committee, the Alumni Association Board of Directors had its first meeting on Monday, December 3—I am pleased to say everyone attended the first meeting. We learned more about each member of the Board, reviewed the by-laws, and discussed what motivated each member to be part of the Board. Each member is committed, dedicated, and excited about being part of the Association. Each is looking forward to connecting with fellow alumni and current students, thereby enhancing the University of Maryland School of Social Work. Some activities the Association will sponsor or take part in include student club activities, alumni outreach events, and Homecoming in the fall of 2008. Our next meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 4.
We thank and recognize the Steering Committee, led by Dr. Weinstein, shown above, who worked diligently over the past year to put in place a good structure for this Association to start with, including formulating the proposed by-laws and narrowing down the list of Board candidates from 11,000 to the eight we have today.
The Board represents the diversity of our School and our alumni quite well. We have eight members on the Board, and are currently looking to fill two empty slots: representation from our PhD and our SWCOS programs.
We welcome the following alumni to the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association:
Ms. Candace M. Cotton, MSW '05 - Licensed Clinical Therapist, community mental health for urban non-profit health clinic
Mrs. Kate L. Genut, MSW '70 - Licensed Clinical Therapist, private practice
Mr. Jose Hallmen, MSW '98 - Licensed Clinical Therapist, school-based social worker
Ms. Danielle Herrmann, MSW '06 - Consultant
Mrs. LaFrance K. Muldrow, MSW '76 - Clinical
Mr. Richard L. Norman, MSW '74 - CEO of Martin Pollack Project, Inc.
Mr. Anthony J. Russo, MSW '79 - Contractor, consultant with U.S. Department of Labor
Dr. Stanley E. Weinstein, MSW '68 - President and CEO of The Woodbourne Center
Ms. Sue Westgate, MSW '06 - EAP Specialist
I look forward to working with the Alumni Association and the Board of Directors as the Association helps the School engage our alumni, raise our visibility and have a greater impact on the community.
