The University of Maryland School of Social Work Homecoming 2009 took place on Friday, October 16th. Despite the rainy and cold weather, the event was tremendous!
The subject of healthcare and the role social workers play in the debate was the theme for this year's Homecoming event at the School of Social Work. In addition, new this year was an alumni awards luncheon where the School honored excellence by our graduates.
The morning session included the contrasting views of Vincent DeMarco and Jeff Singer in a Healthcare Dialogue. DeMarco is president of the Maryland Citizen's Health Initiative and Singer, a 1985 graduate of the School, is president and CEO of Health Care for the Homeless.
An alumni panel responded on the continuum of care and included the views of Michael Becketts,
MSW '97, who spoke about HIV in relation to the healthcare dialogue; Libby Bowerman, MSW '86, who discussed care for those in the aging population; and Mary Jelacic, MSW '88, who addressed the continuum of care in relation to pregnancy centers. Becketts is currently deputy director, Office of Licensing and Monitoring with the State of Maryland Department of Human Resources. Bowerman is CEO of Keswick Multi-Care Center. Jelacic is executive director of Pregnancy AID Centers, Inc.
At the reunion luncheon, after an absence of 17 years, alumni awards returned and the following awards for 2009 were handed out to the following distinguished graduates:
- Melissa Kline, MSW ’05, who received the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award
- Johanna Mauro, MSW ’08, who also received the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award
