Dr. Stanley E. Weinstein, MSW, PhD ’68, has made the successful transition from an early career in clinical social work to human service management. As president and CEO of the Woodbourne Center, a non profit organization providing residential behavioral health and education services and an array of community-based programs for emotionally troubled children and adolescents, Dr. Weinstein oversees operations for one of America’s oldest child welfare organizations. The center serves more than 500 children and adolescents from across the social work continuum. Improving the quality of life for individuals and families continues to be at the heart of Dr. Weinstein’s lifelong interest in the delivery of mental health servicesand systems.

Diane I. Bell, MSW ’75, is president and CEO of Empower Baltimore Management Corporation (EBMC), the nonprofit organization set up to manage the Empowerment Zone in Baltimore City. Since the Empowerment Zone designation in 1994, more than 12,000 residents have been placed in jobs and approximately 6,000 jobs have been created. Ms. Bell also builds bridges among different sectors in the Baltimore community to support economic change for people and places. She has long served in positions related to community building, in both program and policy aspects, over the span of her career. Through her work, Ms. Bell not only links underserved populations with vital services, but also provides them with resources, including access and linkage to mainstream partners, to permanently change their lives.

The Open Society Institute named Sarah Penna, MSW ’04, a Baltimore Community Fellow in 2004. As a fellow, Ms. Penna partners with the Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative/Health Care for All! Coalition on the project, Faces of Maryland’s Uninsured. This project gives a voice to those who want to tell their story about the difficulties they encounter because they lack quality and affordable health insurance. These stories will be documented in books and a film that will educate both the public and lawmakers in order to further health care reform efforts in Maryland. Ms. Penna’s dedication to this cause is empowering individuals and families as they overcome obstacles to obtaining adequate healthcare.
