Aunt Hattie's Place Public Defenders Office at the university of Maryland Law Clinic East and Southeast Baltimore Partnerships West Baltimore Empowerment Initiative Baltimore Freedom Academy SOCKS Advocates for Children and Youth-Educational Advocacy - work on education and child related legislation, social policy and community outreach. One MACO placement. Aunt Hattie’s Place - Aunt Hattie’s Place is a residential care facility for young boys, ages 9-13, who have special educational needs and are in foster care. Wrap around services reflect a holistic approach to care. Social work intervention is integrated with other services in response to the physical, social, educational, spiritual and emotional needs of the children. One Clinical or Foundation placement. Baltimore CityTeen Court – This interdisciplinary project combines youth and their parent/guardian with the legal system (court adjudication and alternative sentencing) with a “citizenship law-related education program for the schools of Maryland”. Responsibilities include project coordination, referral, follow-up and providing direct service to youth. One MACO placement. Baltimore Freedom Academy – Provide social work services at this innovative high school in Baltimore City. BFA provides a comprehensive, project based-learning experience for a student body of 200 (9th &10th graders). As part of the Student Personal Development Planning process, a Clinical or Foundation social work intern will assess students and their families at admission. The intern will provide school mental health and supportive counseling, as well as information and referral for BFA students and family members. A MACO student will assist with parent and community engagement, and will assist with community projects. One Clinical or Foundation intern and one MACO intern. Brooklyn/Curtis Bay Coalition- This position will involve organizing residents of South Baltimore by working with the BCBC (a community development corporation) and the (South Baltimore) Ministerial Alliance. These organizations are attempting to stabilize the Brooklyn and Curtis Bay communities through community organizing/building, neighborhood revitalization (housing), and economic development. One MACO placement. Challengers Independent Living, Inc - This initiative provides teenagers and young adults, aged 16 – 21 with a supportive “bridge” between foster care and independent living. Interns will work with clients individually and in the group setting, with the goal of achieving independence. Challengers offer educational support, vocational training, clinical and case management services, life skills training and advocacy. One Clinical and/or Foundation placement. Citizens Planning and Housing Association (CPHA) - CPHA provides research, leadership development, community organizing and technical assistance to community organizations. SWCOS interns will use community-organizing skills to assist communities in the Baltimore region to resolve issues and meet needs. One MACO Placement. East and Southeast Baltimore Partnership - Working with several community organizations, SWCOS interns provide community organizing, advocacy, outreach, project development, fundraising and case management services for residents residing in East Baltimore. Sites include St. Michael’s Outreach Center, Baltimore American Indian Center, Centro de la Comunidad, Apostolic Towers, Baltimore Resettlement Center, the Southeast Community Organization (SECO) and Southeast CDC. Eight (8) MACO, Clinical and Foundation placements. Elementary and Middle School-Based Programs - In West Baltimore, at 2 elementary schools and 1 middle school, and in South Baltimore, at 2 elementary schools and 1 junior high, SWCOS interns provide individual, group and family counseling, play therapy, crisis intervention, peer mediation, skill development, and advocacy to children and their families. In addition, SWCOS interns develop and facilitate other initiatives for students, parents, school staff, and the communities they serve. Eight Clinical and eight Foundation placements. Grassroots Nonprofit Resource Mentoring Project – Working out of the SWCOS main office, Social work interns will assist grassroots community organizations to build capacity in order to sustain themselves and achieve their mission. Interns will assist with program assessment, strategic planning, fundraising, Board development, etc., following a mentorship model. Three MACO placements. Maryland Disabilities Forum - Work on legislation and train advocates concerning the needs of individuals with disabilities. MDF is lead by individuals with disabilities and represents a range of programs serving Maryland disabled persons. Two MACO placements. Public Defenders Office at the University of Maryland Law Clinic – This program of the Baltimore City Office of the Public Defender provides clinical services to persons coming before the South Baltimore Mental Health Court. For this SWCOS and University of Maryland Law School affiliated program, the field instructor and interns are housed in the Law Clinic of the University of Maryland School of Law. Interns will work with the court in determining mental health treatment alternatives to sentencing for mentally ill clients. Interns will provide case management and will develop linkages with a range of community resources. Eight Foundation or Clinical placements, including two summer/fall Clinical placements. Reservoir Hill - Intern will work with the Healthy Neighborhoods Project to generate citizen involvement in making the neighborhood a community of choice. One MACO placement. SWCOS Main Office - Organization Development/Fundraising - will involve program planning and fundraising for community , includes mobilizing constituents and resources, organizing and staffing committees, developing grant proposals and working on events. One MACO placement. West Baltimore Empowerment Initiative - SWCOS interns provide counseling, advocacy, community organizing, and outreach for residents in the West Baltimore Empowerment Zone. Sites include the Washington Village/Pigtown Neighborhood Planning Council, and the Harlem Park Village Centers. Two MACO and two Clinical/Foundation placements. New SWCOS Placements Under Construction: American Civil Liberties Union, Maryland Chapter – ACLU-MD is committed to ensuring that Marylanders are “free to think and speak as they choose and can lead lives free from discrimination and unwarranted government intrusion.” MACO-related work may include the ACLU-MD’s Public Education Program (principally focused on youth), Community Outreach activities, and Legislative Advocacy (specific to civil liberties issues) vis-‘a –vis MD state government. One MACO placement. Community Leadership Project – Headquartered at the SWCOS main office, interns will assist with trainings and technical assistance to grassroots community organizations in areas such as board and organizational development, resource development, organizing strategies, and dispute resolution. Two MACO interns. SOCKS - An after school in Southwest Baltimore operated by three community associations. Children meet at 5 p.m., five days per week for dinner, homework preparation, group discussion and recreation. Intern would provide counseling, crisis intervention and resource referral for children attending the program and their families. Community outreach and/or program development assignments would be included. Evening field hours. One Foundation student. Social Work in Philanthropy - Interns will work with Baltimore area grant makers to review proposals, provide advice and assistance to grant seekers and to assist in research for programs under consideration by the funders. Sites include Baltimore Community Foundation, Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Annie E. Casey Foundation and Association of Baltimore Area Grant makers. *Some SWCOS field placements include stipends.
