UMB School of Social Work Adjunct Faculty Bios

Shauna Acquavita
Acquavita received her BS from Pennsylvania State University and her MSW from University of Pittsburgh. She has been in clinical practice for nearly 10 years. Currently she is pursuing her PhD at the University of Maryland Baltimore in Social Work and is a Maternal an Child Health Pre-doctoral Fellow.

Elizabeth Alex

Michael Becketts
Becketts received his MSW from the UMB School of Social Work and his Master of Science in Health Administration from the University of Baltimore.  His is currently the Director of Social Work and Manager of Ryan White Services for the Johns Hopkins Adult HIV/AIDS Services

Dara Bergel, MSW, LGSW
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, she has worked extensively as a medical social worker and is currently a third year doctoral student here at UMB.

Robert Blancato

Sue Brocklebank, MSW, LCSW
As a freelance consultant, Brocklebank cordinates, designs, and implements a variety of training programs for community service and educational groups.  She also serves as a liaison for the School's satellite program in Shady
Grove, Maryland.

Virletta Bryant

Daniel L. Buccino, MA, MSW, LCSW-C, BCD
Buccino is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and the Smith College School for Social Work and is also on the faculties of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and The Smith College School for Social Work. He is a clinical supervisor and student coordinator in the Community Psychiatry Program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and a Founder and Director of the Baltimore Psychotherapy Institute.

Karen Castellanos-Brown, MSW
Brown
received her master’s degree from University of Cental Florida. She is currently working on her PhD at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Her research interests include child welfare, social work education, and substance abuse.

Dimitrios Cavathas, MSW, LCSW-C
He is the division director for community services at People Encouraging People, Inc.; a 25-year old private nonprofit community-based organization in Baltimore.

Amy Cohen-Callow, MSSW
She received her masters from Columbia University. She is currently a John A. Hartford Doctoral Fellow conducting research on older adult volunteers and workforce development. Amy has taught programs management at the University of Maryland and research methods at both the University of Maryland and Towson University.

Clara Daining, PhD, MSW
Daining
received her masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Maryland School of Social Work.  She is currently Assistant Research Professor and Research Director of the Ruth H. Young Center for Families and Children at the University of Maryland School of Social Work.

Gina DeLeonardis, MSW, LCSW-C
DeLeonardis received her bachelor’s degree from Loyola College, Baltimore, and her graduate degree from University of Maryland. She has been in clinical practice, seeing adolescent and adult clients, for over 20 years, with specialty areas in addictions grief and family transitions.

Michael Demidenko, MSW, LCSW-C
Demidenko
received his masters degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and is currently a public administration doctoral candidate at the University of Baltimore.  He has been in public child welfare practice for 10 years and is a foster care supervisor with the Baltimore County Department of Social Services.     

Timothy Donovan
Timothy C. Donovan, MSW, LCSW-C received his MSW from the University of Maryland, Baltimore and has practicing clinical social work for 14 years.  At present, he splits his time between clinical practice and teaching plus he is the president for the Maryland Society for Clinical Social Work.

Elkins received her master’s degree from Catholic University. She has been on Faculty of the School of Social Work for 17 years in the Office of Field Education. She is currently a coordinator for the Social Work Program at University of Shady Grove, she has been in both adjunct and private practice focusing on families and groups.

Donald Fandetti

Frances Forstenzer, LCSW-C, BCD
She received her bachelor’s and masters degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She has been in clinical practice for more than 42 years. Currently she is in full time private practice; adjunct faculty at University of Maryland Baltimore since 1990 and a frequent workshop leader for the Continuing Education Program at University of Maryland Baltimore as well as other organizations.

Roger Friedman, PhD, LCSW-C
Roger S. Friedman received an MSW from UMB SSW, and a PhD in Developmental Psychology from UMCP. He has maintained a clinical practice for over 25 years in Silver Spring, MD., and provides consultation services to The Maryland Department of Human Resources and other state and county child welfare programs across the country. He was an Assistant Professor at UMB SSW form 1981-1986.

Maya Gibbons, MSW
Gibbons received her master's degree from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis.  She has worked as a healthcare social worker and a clinical therapist in an adolescent psychiatric hospital.  Most recently, she was the Director of the Office of Counseling and Testing at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC where she coordinated counseling services, organized psycho-educational programs for faculty, staff, and students and received over $200,000 in grants from both state and federal sources for programs in HIV/AIDS prevention and sexual assault/abuse prevention and treatment.  She is currently a doctoral student at the School of Social Work where her research interests include HIV/AIDS and African American women and culturally competent social work education.

Jani received her master’s degree from Jane Addams School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She has been in clinical practice for 8 years and currently is finishing her PhD at University of Maryland, Baltimore.

Denise King

Peggy Kolodny
Kolodny received her master’s degree in Art Therapy from the George Washington University. She has been in clinical practice for 26 years and currently has a private practice in Owings Mills, MD. She teaches art and play therapy workshops nationwide for the Chesapeake Beach Professional Seminars. Peggy is the past president of the Maryland Art Therapy Association.

Dr. Lindy Lewis

She is the program manager for the Family Welfare Research and Training Group at the School.

JoAnna Macht, LCSW-C

Macht has lectured and presented workshops both regionally and nationally for over 15 years. She is President of the Baltimore Society for Psychoanalytic Studies and has a full-time private practice in Baltimore, where she practices psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Maria L. Mays, Ph.D., MSSW

She received her master’s degree as well as Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington.  She has taught social work courses at several University campuses including the University of Nevada, Reno, the University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of Maryland.  She has professional experience as a crisis interventionist, researcher, and program evaluator.

Melissa McDermott-Lane, LCSW-C
She received her master’s degree from the University of Chicago, School of Social Service Administration. She has practiced in the field of child maltreatment since 1987 as a therapist, child interviewer, administrator, and trainer. Currently, she maintains a private practice and is the training specialist at the University of Maryland, School of Social Work, Ruth H. Young Center for Families and Children.

Reid is a Licensed Clinical Social Work with a Master’s degree in social work. Extensive experience for over 25 years in the area of mental health and public heath. Expertise in clinical assessment and treatment of individuals, couples, families, and groups. Qualified in clinical supervision. Experience with program design, development, and management, including leadership of interdisciplinary treatment team. Experience in training, consolation, assessment, and graduate education. Experience in sentence mitigation and forensic social work practice.

Eunice Park, MSW, LGSW
She has worked with internationally adopted children and their adoptive parents.  She is a Hartford Doctoral fellow and currently working on her disseration on subjective well-being among elderly Korean immigrants.

JuYoung Park
Park received her master’s degree from University of South Carolina. She is a doctoral student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She worked as a clinical social worker at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. She provided crisis intervention and assessments fo clients entering utilization review unit.

Joanna Pierson, MSW, PhD, received her Masters from the University of Michigan and her Doctorate from the University of Maryland.  She has been a community organizer and social work administrator for over 25 years, working with people who have developmental disabilities and providing service coordination.

Evelyn Slaght, MSW, PhD, LCSW
Slaght received her masters from the University of Maryland Baltimore, specialized in community organization. She received her PhD from the University of Maryland at College Park, completing her dissertation through the Institute of Criminal Justice. She has been teaching social work since 1987. She served as an administrator for 2 state agencies and as a lobbyist and researcher for several private agencies. She is knowledgeable in social policy, crime and delinquency and substance abuse.

Charles Smith, MSW, PhD, LCSW-C
He has woprked as a direct practitioner in Child Protective Services and Adult Protective Services, managed a respite care program that served disabled individuals and their families, and is currently a Healthcare Research Analyst for Montgomery County Health and Human Services.  In 1994, he was awarded a John A, Hartford Geriatric Doctoral Fellowship.

He coordinates addiction programs at Chase Brexton Health Services in Baltimore.
