A good working computer with the latest software can help you complete your UMB education. While the school of Social Work is not requiring you to purchase this laptop you can take advantage of the volume pricing created by the combined UMB school's bulk purchase. This is a considerable price reduction, configuring the system from Dell without using the program would result in a price of more then $2200.

* Important Note, the laptops ordered through the UMB program have had Microsoft Office and Symantec Antivirus preinstalled on them. The cost for this software is not included in the price (it was cheaper for you the purchaser if we used software from the Campus Software licensing office, instead of a Dell Microsoft agreement installation). The cost of this software is $110.  

Computing Recommendations

Software

Anti-Virus Software

Most important for safe computing is to purchase an Anti-virus software package. UMB recommends the Symantec anti-virus. Symantec can be purchased from the software licensing office by going to the main desk of the HSHSL.

Application Software

Microsoft Office
The University has negotiated volume pricing from Microsoft for the latest version of Microsoft Office. MS Office can be purchased from the software licensing office by going to the main desk of the HSHSL.

PDF creation software
It is becoming increasingly useful to be able to view and create .pdf documents on your own. Adobe Acrobat reader is available free from Adobe for viewing documents. The full version of Acrobat can be purchased or any number of free pdf makers like PrimoPDF downloaded for pdf file creation.

Statistical analysis software
It is recommended that you wait and check with your instructors before purchasing any specialized statistical analysis software.

Use of your laptop or any computing device using the campus network is governed by the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy. As a UMB student, it is your responsibility to read, understand and comply with this policy.
