| The School of Social Work now offers off-site access to files stored on the school’s file server (sowk-ad-files). The following instructions are for access to WEBDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) from a windows PC. MAC users will need to file a WEBDAV client and modify the directions as needed.
The following step-by-step instructions will allow you to access and manage your files from any Windows machine with Internet Explorer. - If you do not have Internet Explorer 5.x (really you should be on ie6 if not ie7 by now) or above installed, download the software from http://www.microsoft.com and run the setup with default values.
- Using Internet Explorer, select "File - Open" from the Internet Explorer menu bar.
- Type the following URL in the text box and be sure to select the checkbox "Open as a Web Folder."
Be sure to use 'https' instead of just 'http' when logging in to manage your files. The 'https' protocol allows you to manage your files with a secure certificate, while just using 'http' does not use the secure mode. - Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
- There should be a "My Network Places" link on the left, click on it
- You should see an icon that says "Add Network Place"
- A window opens. At the " Type the location of the Network Place " prompt type in the following URL:
Be sure to use 'https' instead of just 'http' when logging in to manage your files. The 'https' protocol allows you to manage your files with a secure certificate, while just using 'http' does not use the secure mode. - Click on " Next "
- You will be prompted for a username and password to access the web folder
- Windows XP: Type your email address as your username and your password is the same password as your email & desktop login password.
- Windows 95, 98, & 2000: It should prompt you for your username, password, and domain. Your username is everything to the left of the @ sign in your email address (e.g juser for juser@ssw.umaryland.edu) and your password is the same password as your email & desktop login password. For the domain, enter "SOWK" and click "Next."
- At the "Enter Name for the Network Place" prompt you may enter an alias for your web folder.
- Click on "Finish".
- You'll be prompted one more time for your username/password.
- You may now click and drag the files that are ready to be published to the web into this folder.
After you setup your web folder, you will only have to do - Double-click on the " My Computer " icon on your desktop.
- There should be a " My Network Places " link on the left, click on it.
- You should see the web folder you created in the steps above
- Double-click into your folder and you will be able to manage your files.
Important notes: - Just because you can access files from off-site at anytime doesn't mean you should open up folders/files and stay in them constantly. There are maintenance activities that take place in the background and some of these activities require a dedicated system to complete properly. Keeping files open/locked may prevent your file from being backed up. System updates from Microsoft frequently require a system reboot, keeping files open/locked will delay implementation of important system updates. For now it's a honor system, however if I can't do system maintenance I'll have to schedule downtime when files will not be available.
- This is for access to files only, not executible programs, we can't provide access to those.
- If you open school resources (folders/files) from your off-site PC you are responsible for ensuring your PC has an up to date anti-virus program and that you are the only person who can get to the files (e.g. don't click on remember password and let's not have your kids or whoever getting into our file folders.
- Currently the WEBDAV protocol does not support hyperlinks so we can't put a shortcut to the folders on our website.
