Unified Messaging Fact Sheet
Unified messaging is the capability of having your voice mail messages delivered to you via your email account You must first have a voice mailbox, an email account, and a computer or device that is capable of playing a wave file (a file in a Microsoft audio file format: .wav) Complete the online registration form that is available at: http://www.umaryland.edu/cits/forms/unified_messaging.html Yes, a wave file takes up space in your email account. A two-three minute message can take up as much as a 1 MB of e-mail storage space. These files, just like e-mail messages, should be moved periodically to Mail Folders in order have available space in your e-mailbox. If the voice mail message is a unified message user and their name and number is in the voice mail database it will be displayed in the “subject:” line of the email. If the call is from an outside caller the name information is not available, but the calling number may appear if the ANI (Automatic Number Identification) is passed. People who block passing ANI (Caller ID) will not have number show up. Just like an email attachment can be forwarded to another email account or user the wave file can be forwarded as well. Thus, discretion should be used when forwarding or saving sensitive information in a wave file. If your hand held device has the ability to receive email with attachments and the device has the ability to play Microsoft wave files you should have the same functionality as a desktop. The following devices may have this capability, please be sure to speak to the vendor before purchasing: Verizon Wireless Smart Phones/PDA’s Cingular Smart Phones/PDA’s Samsung BlackJack BlackBerry Pearl Cingular 8525 Palm Treo 680 Nokia E62 BlackBerry 7290 Cingular 3125 Cingular 8125 Pocket PC BlackBerry 7130c BlackBerry 8700c Nokia 9300
