SOCIAL WORK LICENSURE INFORMATION
To practice as a Social Worker in the U.S. an individual must be licensed. The social work licensure examinations given throughout the U.S. are overseen by The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). The ASWB website contains many answers to common questions regarding the licensing exam and licensure in general (www.aswb.org).
There are different levels of licensure and each state has different requirements that need to be met. In Maryland and Washington D.C., an entry-level post-MSW license is the LGSW (Licensed Graduate Social Worker).
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE LICENSURE EXAM?
Students graduating with an MSW are eligible to take the LGSW exam and the school encourages students to do so. Degree candidates may apply for licensure by examination in their final semester or after graduation. In Maryland, a sealed letter verifying that the degree candidate is in their final semester must be provided with the application. (Students who prefer to take the exam after graduation are required to send an official transcript along with their application.) The SSW Office of Records & Registration will provide this official letter for a Maryland license to all students who have submitted an Application for Diploma through SURFS with the UMB Registrar’s Office. This letter will be completed within 3 weeks of the diploma application deadline.
Degree candidates requiring a letter for states other than Maryland should submit a request online.
Degree candidates for December, May and July should review the UMB Academic calendar for the applicable diploma application dates.

WHEN DO I RECEIVE MY LICENSE?
Degree candidates in their final semester who successfully pass the Maryland licensure exam must have an official transcript with the date the MSW degree was conferred sent to the Board of Social Work Examiners. This request can be made online at the UMB Office of the Registrar webpage and should note “Hold for degree”. There is no charge for official transcripts. The Board issues the official license to the graduate.
