Below you will find a partial listing of companies, agencies, and resources that may assist PhD graduates when they are looking for employment outside of academia. Alumni of the UMB PhD program are found at many of these organizations.

Research firms and institutes (these are the main Web pages, they have links to their employment information):

ESI provides comprehensive technical assistance, training, and evaluation services to all levels of government and the private industry. They also provide customized services for organizational development, conference planning, information systems design, and health care services. PhD graduates are hired for a variety of positions. This company is headed by Dr. Vincent Perry, an alumnus, and is located in Washington, D.C.

The main objectives of ISR are to conduct significant social research, and to provide high quality survey research services to social science colleagues around the country, state, and region. Study directors are PhD graduates. The main office of ISR is in Philadelphia, with a branch office in Washington, D.C.

Caliber conducts applied research, including program, policy and cost studies, for the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense, and other Federal and state governmental agencies. The Web site's career opportunities page includes application and contact information. Caliber is located in Fairfax, VA.

This is a nonprofit corporation that performs basic and applied research, provides technical support, and conducts analyses based on methods of behavioral and social sciences. Their programs areas include education, health, human and organizational performance, and quality of life. There are various locations, including Washington, D.C.

This company focuses on research, management consulting, and information technology. They are located in Calverton, MD.

Westat is an employee-owned research corporation that serves U.S. government agencies, businesses, foundations, and state and local organizations. Their services include statistical survey research, custom research, and program evaluation studies. There are various locations, including Rockville and Bethesda, MD.

This is the United States Government's official source of job and employment information. It includes information about how to apply and links to openings and other useful Web sites There is a link called "other job links" that will allow you to search for jobs in specific government agencies, such as Housing and Urban Development.

The Office of Personnel Management is the federal government's human resources agency. The Web site includes pay tables and other useful information about federal employment. From the homepage, you can click "Quick Index" and then choose 'classification' from this index page to learn more about the federal job classification system.

The General Accounting Office hires PhD graduates for evaluating programs.

The NIH's mission is to uncover new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone. NIH works toward that mission by conducting research, supporting the research of non-Federal scientists, helping in the training of research investigators, and fostering communication of medical information. NIH is located in Bethesda, MD.

DHHS is the United States government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. Activities related to social work include social science research, Medicare and Medicaid, financial assistance and services to families with low-incomes, improving maternal and infant health, Head Start, preventing domestic violence and child abuse, substance abuse treatment and prevention, services for older-Americans, and comprehensive health services for Native Americans. Employment opportunities and research grants are available at this website. The agency is located in Washington, D.C.

Michigan Social Work Connection is an online clearinghouse resource center by social workers for social workers, social work organizations, and social work related entities for the promotion of the social work field and all its participants. There is a substantial portion of the Web site dedicated to job searching.
