Donna Leigh Bliss Award in Substance Abuse [deadline to apply May 1] Applications Usually Accepted In the Spring Semester Dr. Donna Leigh Bliss, MSW ’91 and PhD ’05 has made possible a $500 award to be given in May to a current MSW student who is about to enter his or her advanced year with a specialization or sub-specialization in substance abuse. The purpose of the award is to support a student who has made a commitment to work with people affected by substance abuse and with programs and organizations targeted to serving the needs of this population, upon graduation. In order to be considered for the award, applicants must submit a 250-500 word essay articulating his or her experiences in and future commitment to working with people affected by substance abuse. Students must be in good academic standing to be considered for the Bliss award. Please attach a cover page that includes your name, social security number, student I.D. number, and contact information. Place only your student I.D. number on the essay. The cover page will be removed so the essay can be reviewed anonymously by the award committee.
Paul H. Ephross Scholarship in Social Group Work For students enrolled at the UMBSSW who are pursuing a degree in the area of group work and who are doing their field internship through SWCOS; to encourage students to creatively use groups in community-based practice; and to promote a broader conception and practice of social group work.

John Goldmeier Scholarship Award [deadline to apply May 1] Applications Usually Accepted In the Spring Semester In honor of Dr. John Goldmeier, a former professor at the School of Social Work, one $600 award will be given this May to a current MSW student who is about to enter his or her advanced year in the Clinical Concentration. The purpose of the award is to support a student with a commitment to clinical social work practice. In order to be considered for the award, applicants must submit a 250-400 word essay articulating their vision of clinical practice in the 21st century. Students must be in good academic standing to be considered. Please attach a cover page that has your name, social security number, student ID number, and contact information. The cover page will be removed so the essay can be reviewed anonymously by the committee. Write only your student I.D. number on the essay. The winner will be notified in early June.
The Gwendolyn C. Lee Scholarship Award for Innovative Practice by a Social Work Student [deadline to apply May 1] Applications Usually Accepted In the Spring Semester For the third time, a $500 award will be given in spring 2006 to a first- or second-year student who has carried out a successful piece of innovative practice at their field instruction site with an organization, community, or on behalf of individuals.
Gwendolyn C. Lee, after whom the award is named, was, until her death in 1978, a social worker who practiced in a variety of settings in the Baltimore area. She was a firm believer in advocacy and challenged the profession to think in creative ways. Students who wish to be considered for this award should submit a two-page description of the innovative practice which should include: why it is innovative, and how it has been effective
References from social work literature that support its innovativeness should be included. The submission must include your name and must be signed by the field instructor at your agency.
The Maternal and Child Health Social Work Leadership Development Program Each academic year the School's Center for Maternal and Child Health Social Work Education provides six $7,000 scholarships for masters-level students specializing in child, adolescent and family health. Special consideration will be given to students in the combined MSW/MPH program.
Stanley Wenocur Scholarship in Community Organizing [will be awarded at a future date] For students enrolled at UMBSSW who are pursuing a degree in the area of community organizing, with a preference given to those who are doing their field internships through SWCOS; to encourage students to challenge institutional arrangements of power for those who have been marginalized by those arrangements; to develop innovative approaches to organizing; and to promote a long-term commitment to the marginalized.
Sue Wolman Fellowship [deadline to apply August 31] A scholarship of $1,750 is given to a clinical concentration student placed in Social Work Community Outreach Service (SWCOS) with an additional $250 availabe for conference-related expenses. To apply, the student must respond in a SWCOS-related essay, demonstrate financial need, and be doing a fall-spring advanced year placement in SWCOS. The essay must be submitted by August 1st. Ruth H. Young Scholarship Award [deadline to apply May 1] Applications Usually Accepted In the Spring Semester In honor of Ruth H. Young, a former Dean of the SSW, one $600 award will be given this May to a MSW student who is about to enter his or her advanced year. The purpose of this award is to support students with a commitment to practice in child welfare upon graduation. In order to be considered for the award, an applicant must submit a 250-500 word essay describing his or her experiences in and future commitment to social work practice in the child welfare system. We are looking for essays that describe what the meaning of the practice experience has been to the student applicant, as well as how that experience has shaped what the student plans to do in child welfare upon graduation. Once the essay is evaluated, the committee reviewing the application will also consider the applicant’s grade point average and the first-year field instructor’s final evaluation. Please use a cover page containing your name, social security number, and contact information. The essay itself should contain only your student I.D.number as identification so the essay can be reviewed anonymously. The winner will be informed in early June.
