(Overview Statement)
The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) of the University of Maryland opened in April, 1998. The six-story state-of-the-art HS/HSL building was designed to support digital information technologies. It houses library services and collections as well as campus computing services. The library has 1500 data connections, 111 study carrels, 38 group study rooms, a café, and comfortable lounge seating. There are three computer classrooms and a 42-workstation Research and Information Commons area with access to a wide variety of databases, the Internet and World Wide Web, and computer software packages. In addition, there are computers and printers on the upper floors. Among the special design features are the striking central staircase, and the tower on the northeast corner with its panoramic view of the city.

The HS/HSL, located on the southwest corner of Lombard and Greene Streets, serves the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Pharmacy, Nursing and Social Work, the University of Maryland Medical System, the Graduate School, and other affiliated institutions.

The HS/HSL library was established in 1813 when 400 volumes were purchased from the estate of Dr. John Crawford. It currently has over2,300 periodical subscriptions in print, more than 1,500 electronic journals, over 153,000 books, and 300 plus e-books.

The HS/HSL is also the regional medical library for ten southeastern states the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands as part of the National Library of Medicine's National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM).

Food and beverage policy: To protect library collections, equipment furnishings and décor and to maintain a professional atmosphere, beverages may not be brought into the building unless they are in an authorized container. These containers may be purchased in the library. Food is not allowed in any public area.

Note: Please see the appendix for detailed information on the HS/HSL Services.
