By linking graduate social work interns with strong supervision in faculty-based field units (in partnership with the Title IV-E Education for Public Child Welfare Training Program), Family Connections helps families in Baltimore to meet the needs of their children, and since 2004 a special focus has been placed on serving grandparent raising grandchildren. Social work interns placed in the Family Connections offices at 1701 Madison Avenue deliver outcome-based interventions to families who have been identified by community partners as needing assistance. Students are involved in providing home-based intervention and leading community outreach efforts. Clinical assessment instruments and an automated case management system are integrated into the assessment and intervention process. The program offers an intensive orientation, weekly seminars, weekly supervision and competency-based training to support the field placement experience. Research staff, including doctoral students placed with the program, help family members complete standardized computer assisted assessment procedures prior to intervention and at specified intervals, depending on specific research questions. Differences between groups with respect to risk and protective factors, and outcomes of safety and well-being are compared. The program is supported by a combination of government and foundation grants. top .
