Subspecializations

Starting Fall, 2007 the SSW will offer three subspecializations for all foundation students entering Fall, 2006.  These are available along with our five specializations.

Child Adolescent and Family Health Subspecialization (currently an option) is available within the Health Specialization.  Students must complete the Health Specialization for their chosen concentration.  Students substitute SOWK 789 "Social Work Research in Child, Adolescent, and Family Health" for their research option and take SWCL 714, "Social Work Practice in Child, Adolescent and Family Health" as an elective.  While fulfilling these requirements, students who choose a secondary concentration if primarily Clinical would choose between SOWK 765 or SWCL 712.  The would also take SWOA 703 or SWOA 704 and another SWOA option.  If they are primarily MACO and secondarily Clinical, they would take SWCL 700 or SWCL 744.

Employee Assistance Program Subspecialization (to be an option) will be available within the Mental Health Specialization.  Students must complete the Mental Health Specialization for their chosen concentration.  Students take SOWK 725 "Industrial Social Services and Social Policy" for their policy course and also take either SWOA 736 "Administering EAPs" or SWCL 705 "Clinical Social Work with Addictive Behavior Patterns" (to be determined Fall, 2006).  While fulfilling these requirements, students who choose a secondary concentration if primarily Clinical would choose between SWOA 703 and SWOA 704 and take SWOA 736 (if offered).  If they are primarily MACO and secondarily Clinical, they would take SWCL 700 or SWCL 744 and SWCL 705.

Substance Abuse Subspecialization (to be an option) will be available within the Mental Health Specialization.  Students must complete the Mental Health Specialization for their chosen concentration.  Students take SOWK 717 "Substance Abuse and Social Policy" for their policy course.  This course is only available online.  They must also take SWCL 705 "Clinical Social Work with Addictive Behavior Patterns."  While fulfilling these requirements, students who choose a secondary concentration if primarily Clinical would choose between SWOA 703 and SWOA 704 and take any other SWOA courses.  If they are primarily MACO and secondarily Clinical, they would take SWCL 700 or SWCL 744 and SWCL 705.
