The University of Maryland School of Social Work Sustainability Committee
Get Involved with Sustainability at the School of Social Work!
The Sustainability Committee meets on the 2nd Friday of each month from 12:15-1:15pm in the Green Room on the First floor of the SMC Campus Center. All are welcome!
The purpose of the SSW Sustainability Committee is to examine ways we as a community can increase our ecological awareness and lessen our impact on the physical environment. The Committee is charged with advising the Dean of the School of Social Work, the Student Government Association, and socialw ork students on matters pertaining to the environment and sustainability as it relates to the University of Maryland Baltimore, School of Social Work. To fulfill this obligation, the SSW Sustainability Committee is comprised of a diverse cross-section of stake holders including students, staff, and faculty.
Sustainability can be defined as: "meeting the needs of the present...without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs" (Brundtland report, 1987).
The mission of the SSW Sustainability Committee includes:
- Creating a culture of sustainable thinking in line with social work values in the School of Social Work at all levels of the program (students, staff, and faculty) through education.
- Engaging the school, campus, and community in an ongoing dialogue about reaching environment sustainability through education and advocacy.
- Lessening the environmental impact of the school through education and efficient resource utilization.
