Michael Reisch, PhD, is the Daniel Thursz Distinguished Professor of Social Justice at the University of Maryland. He has held faculty and administrative positions at four other major U.S. universities and has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley (3 times), the New Bulgarian University in Sofia, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
Professor Reisch is the author or editor of nearly 30 books and monographs, over 100 articles and book chapters, and over 400 papers at state, national, and international conferences. His most recent books include Social Policy and Social Justice (Sage), The Routledge International Handbook of Social Justice, The Handbook of Community Practice (Sage), and Social Work Practice and Social Justice: Concepts, Challenges, and Strategies (Oxford University Press). Another book, Macro Practice in a Multicultural Society, will be published in 2017.
Professor Reisch has played a leadership role in advocacy, professional, and social change organizations that focused on issues of poverty and inequality, particularly as they affect low-income children and families, welfare recipients, immigrants and refugees, and unemployed or homeless persons. In 2013, he was named “Social Work Educator of the Year” by the Maryland Chapter of NASW. In October 2014, he received both the “Teacher of the Year” award from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the Significant Lifetime Achievement award from the Council on Social Work Education.
Professor Reisch teaches courses in the MSW program on social policy, macro practice, social justice, and social work values and ethics, and courses on social theory in the PhD program.
Dr. Reisch is currently working with a group of faculty from Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, and the University of Baltimore on a "University Partnership for Baltimore's Future" which has, among its several goals, the creation of a partnership among the city's major universities and its civic
