The Financial Social Work Initiative (FSWI) serves as a platform from which the University of Maryland School of Social Work (UMSSW) undertakes a leadership role in building financial well-being in individuals, couples, and families and confronting economic injustice and building economic strength in communities. Capitalizing on both its academic infrastructure and community outreach services, UMSSW integrates social work practice and theory into the evolving fields of addressing financial distress and fostering individual and community asset-building.
FSWI prepares social workers to advance the economic stability and financial well-being of individuals, families, and communities, with particular attention to vulnerable populations. As social workers, we are at the forefront of the development and delivery of a continuum of asset-building and financial security programs, services, products, and policy strategies by engaging in direct service provision, including emerging interventions such as financial coaching and financial therapy, appropriate client referrals, research, evaluation, outreach, advocacy, and collaboration with community-based partners.
In addition to providing academic training, field placement experiences, research, and continuing education in financial social work, FSWI aims to actively build and support a professional network in this field and to demonstrate leadership both nationally and internationally.
Please join us to learn more about how to integrate financial social work into your social work practice, across agency and setting. Also learn more about scholarship opportunities and field opportunities!

The Title IV-E Program is a collaboration between the University of Maryland School of Social Work and the Maryland Department of Human Resources.
Director: Chris Wirt cwirt@ssw.umaryland.edu
The purpose of the Title IV-E program is to prepare MSW students for public child welfare practice.
