98420 SOWK 699 03 Interprofessional Patient-Centered Approach to Medication Management in Mental Health TBD The class will meet for five 2-hour in-person class sessions in Fall Semester (Fridays; 9/4, 9/18, 10/2, 10/16, 10/30 from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm). Prior to each class session, students will be required to read the posted reading assignments and come to class prepared for active participation in discussion regarding the assigned topics. This is a 1-credit elective course, where second and third year pharmacy students and second year social work students will work collaboratively to explore issues related to optimizing medication management for patients with mental health disorders. Providing patient care for this population requires an understanding of pharmacotherapeutic options, psychotherapeutic options, social determinants of health, respect for patient autonomy and methods for shared decision making. Through working collaboratively on patient cases, pharmacy and social work students will explore these concepts and practice developing individualized treatment plans. 94222 SOWK 789 02 RESEARCH PROJ: ATTACHMENT & LOSS Ringel The purpose of this 3-credit advanced research course is to introduce students to the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and to teach them to identify organized and attachment patterns as well as disorganized attachment due to loss. This skill will enhance students’ clinical knowledge to help them conduct more effective clinical interviews, and understand how organized and disorganized attachment styles impact the ability to process loss. The Adult Attachment Interview is a standardized qualitative measure that has been utilized in many research studies, and Dr. Ringel is a certified researcher on this instrument. Approved as the advanced research requirement for Clinical students in the Families & Children (not Title IV-E), Behavioral Health, Aging, and Health specializations.
97312 SOWK 789 01 RESEARCH PROJECT: INTERRACIAL/INTER-ETHNIC COUPLES RESEARCH Greif The purpose of this 3-credit advanced research course is to introduce students to the qualitative research process and the ways that it can be used to build understanding of under-researched topics. In class time is limited to Mondays 12:15 – 1:45 to allow enough out-of-class time to complete research project components. This understanding can lead to theory development and the development of practice interventions. The topic is interracial couples’ relationships. Students will first complete required IRB training (CITI and HIPAA). They will then be trained on how to conduct a qualitative interview with one partner in an interracial/interethnic couple using a survey and interview guide to learn what their experiences are as a couple. Three interviews are to be completed. They will submit a written transcript of each interview for analysis. Students will read and discuss other students’ interviews during class time, participate in class discussions where the meaning and central themes from the interviews will be discussed, make a brief in-class presentation of their initial findings, and turn in a 10-15 page paper based on research findings. This course fulfills the advanced research requirement and has been approved for Clinical Concentrators in the Behavioral Health, EAP, Aging, Health, and Families and Children (not Title IV-E) specializations. Prerequisites: SOWK 670
