The decision to attend and finance graduate school is one of the biggest decisions you will make in your life. You want to make sure the choice is the right one for you and that all your hard work will pay off. We get it. We understand.

Here are some helpful points that will hopefully give you a better understanding of the personal investment needed to be successful at the University of Maryland School of Social Work.

  • We are a 60-credit program. That's 20 classes and includes your field education time commitment.
  • Some classes will be in-person while others may be in an online hybrid format.
  • Depending on how you enter the program (foundation or advanced standing student) you will be in a field placement site 2 to 3 days a week for 16 to 24 hours.
  • While it has been done, working a full-time job and trying to pursue the MSW degree is extremely difficult to be successful at. This program is very rigorous and requires students to dedicate at least 3 hours a week of outside classwork (course readings, writing assignments, group work, etc.) for each course. We know all students have different circumstances, but it is not recommended to work full-time while in this program.
  • While the School of Social Work awards hundreds of scholarships to incoming and continuing students, the estimated cost of attendance for a Maryland resident to complete the program is $51,000. The estimated cost of attendance for an out-of-state student to complete the program is $71,000. Students who study at the Shady Grove (USG) campus may pay around $1,000 less due to different fees and charges at the USG campus.
