DSW Accepted Students

DSW Students Accepted for Fall 2026: Welcome to Our Inaugural Cohort!

Students Accepted for Fall 2026

Congratulations on your acceptance to the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program for Fall 2026!

Welcome to our inaugural DSW cohort! You bring such valuable experience, passion, and purpose to our community. We can’t wait to learn and grow together as you advance your impact as a scholar-practitioner through the DSW program.

Below are the steps for students accepted to the DSW program. We know this seems like a great deal to do before you get started, so we encourage you to partialize and take it once piece at a time. Each of these action items will help set you up for success as you get started in the program.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to our Program Coordinator, Tay Johnson, at 410-706-7021 or dsw@ssw.umaryland.edu

Step ONE: Respond to our Offer of Admission

ACCEPT AND CONFIRM YOUR ADMISSION

To secure your spot in the DSW Program, please pay the $300 non-refundable Confirmation Deposit no later than three weeks from the date of your acceptance letter. Please note that the seat deposit helps us plan thoughtfully for the coming cohort and ensures we can provide the support and learning experience you deserve, while also allowing us to offer space to other students if your plans change.

    • PAY ONLINE: Use our secure online portal
    • PAY BY MAIL: Alternatively, mail a check/money order to UMB School of Social Work, Office of Admissions, 525 W. Redwood Street, Baltimore, MD 21201
    • Allow up to 3 business days for payment processing
    • This non-refundable deposit will be credited to your first tuition bill

To accept your admission, we also ask that you complete this DSW Student Information Form to help us get to know you a bit more and prepare for you to get started in the program. Once you've submitted your deposit and accepted admission, please complete the remaining steps below.

If you wish to decline our offer of admission, please complete this Brief Survey to let us know.

Step TWO: Get Connected

GET CONNECTED BY SETTING UP A UMID Account

The UMID is your unique UMB user name, and grants access to many UMB systems, including your umaryland.edu email, which will be the primary source of all SSW and UMB communication.

    • It can take a few days after you have paid your confirmation deposit for your email account to be created.
    • Expect an email with the subject "Welcome to Office 365 - University of Maryland, Baltimore - Action Needed" to your personal email address. Check spam/junk folders.  This will inform you of your new email address, and specific instructions to validate and activate your email.
    • Log into https://directory.umaryland.edu with your UMID and password to validate and activate your email
    • Once completed, you can log in https://outlook.office.com to start sending and receiving emails using your UMaryland email

NOTE: While your UMID is being created, proceed with completing Step 3. Please be aware that Step 4 cannot be completed until your UMID is created.

If you experience technical difficulties or questions related to these accounts and logins, please contact the UMB CITS Helpdesk: 410-706-HELP or help@umaryland.edu or on the 5th floor of the HSHSL. If you experience delays or lack of resolution above, please contact ideateam@ssw.umaryland.edu (only) and include the email with ticket number from the CITS Helpdesk above.

Current UMB Employees Please Note: If you are already employed by UMB and have a Umaryland Email address and UMID, you can ignore the above as you do not need to set up a UMID and will continue using only your existing UMID. Please see this page with more information for UMB Employee Students: https://idea.ssw.umaryland.edu/students/umb-employee-students

Step THREE: Review Information about Residency, Tuition, and Financial Aid
RESIDENCY
    • ALL NEW INCOMING STUDENTS DEFAULT TO AN OUT OF STATE STATUS.

TUITION

FINANCIAL AID
Step Four: Immunization Requirements and Health Insurance Information
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

Every student is required to comply with the University of Maryland's mandatory immunization and TB testing requirements.  You should receive an email from EXXAT, our immunization tracking system, to your UMB email address. This email will contain detailed instructions on how to access and navigate EXXAT, accessed through your SURFS accounts, using your assigned UMID and password. For more information, see the Student Health page here

STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN (SHIP)

All full-time graduate students (9 credits or more) are automatically billed for and enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP).  We recognize that many DSW students may already have health insurance through your employers. Information about waiving your enrollment in the SHIP plan can be found on the  Student Insurance Page.

Step FIVE: Sign up for Your ID Card, Share Accessibility/Accommodation Needs, Blackboard Access, Veteran’s Affairs
ACCESSIBILITY AND ACCOMMODATIONS

At the University of Maryland School of Social Work and as a DSW Program, we value accessibility, neurodiversity, and the varied ways in which we embody and physically engage with content and spaces. A commitment to universal design is part of our mission to foster a culture of inclusion and belonging both within our school and our greater society. We strive toward a structure that reduces the need for accommodations for people with disabilities through proactive, inclusive design within our implicit and explicit curricula. You can learn more about our efforts as a school on our Disability and Accessibility Page. Additional information on requesting specific accommodations can be found below.

You can request academic accommodations for coursework through the Educational Support and Disability Services (ESDS). ESDS works with students with all types of disabilities including physical, learning, sensory, psychological, ADHD, and chronic and acute medical conditions. To ensure timely and appropriate accommodation, please submit your request as early as possible.

STUDENT ID'S

After you have been registered for classes, you can register to receive a One Card. One Card is the official identification card for students and is required for entrance into all buildings on the UMB Campus. You can find information about obtaining your One Card on our webpage How To Get Your One Card.

One Card for new students requires that you:

  • Are a registered student
  • Submit a photo using online photo submission
  • Have a valid government driver’s license, passport, or other photo ID

Your One Card is more than an identification card and is used for:

  • Parking access
  • URecFit (the UMB fitness center)
  • Library Services
  • UMB Shuttle Access

BLACKBOARD ACCESS:

Watch  Logging Into Blackboard For The Very First Time  to learn how to log in to Blackboard for the very first time.
If you cannot log in, please call 410-706-HELP. Please ensure that you are able to log in before you begin classes.

We will be working together to learn how to utilize Blackboard effectively during our Opening Intensive and you will have access to a full Blackboard Orientation as part of that course.

VETERANS AFFAIRS
