Everett Smith Jr., MSW, LMSW is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work, where he has served on the faculty since 2014. He is committed to preparing social work students to deliver evidence-informed, person-centered care grounded in cultural humility and critical reflection.
Everett earned both his BSW and MSW from the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work at Baylor University. His clinical training includes multisystemic family therapy, functional family therapy, and the Sanctuary Model, which supported trauma-responsive work with juvenile justice–involved youth and families in Baltimore City. He has also provided therapeutic services to children, adults, and families in outpatient mental health settings. Everett uses primarily cognitive behavioral and systemic therapeutic approaches with individuals and families.
At UMB, Everett has provided practicum instruction to more than 60 students, teaches foundation and advanced clinical courses, and facilitates interprofessional education initiatives across disciplines. His teaching emphasizes clinical skill development, tele-behavioral health competence, anti-oppressive practice, and the integration of social determinants of health into service delivery.
His research interests include addressing the social determinants of health, youth development, family adaptation to health challenges, interprofessional education, and advancing equitable mental health care through culturally responsive and person-centered approaches.
