What is BHWISE SUDWE?

The Substance Use Disorder Workforce Expansion (SUDWE) Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for MSW students starting the advanced year or accepted with advanced standing, who want to become confident and competent in the treatment of substance use disorders. The SUDWE Fellowship provides students with SUD-focused training and education to equip them to effectively engage and serve the substance use disorder population.

BHWISE SUDWE Fellows are supported in their advanced practicum year with a stipend of $15,000 per student ($7,500 per semester)

Requirements

SUD-specific Advanced Practicum Placement 

Coursework/Training:

  • Motivational Interviewing Training
    • Credits: No Credit
    • Timeline: Summer prior start of to Advanced year à Change to: Summer prior to start of advanced year
  • SWCL 705 Clinical Social Work with Addictive Behavior Patterns
    • Credits: 3 Credits
    • Timeline: Fall or Spring of Advanced year
  • Six Monthly Integrated Practicum Seminars (IN-PERSON; Baltimore campus; mandatory attendance)
    • Fall: September, October, November
    • Spring: February, March, April
    • Credits: No Credit
    • Timeline: Advanced year
  • Interprofessional Education (IPE) Experience
    • Credits: Varies, can include approved non-credit experiences
    • Timeline: Advanced year

 

Who is Eligible?

 To be eligible to apply, students must meet the following criteria:

Students are accepted as Advanced Standing, entering the MSW program in Fall 2027, or are current UMSSW graduate students starting the Advanced Year in the Fall of 2027.

Concentration 

  • Clinical 
  • Clinical/Leadership, Policy, and Social Change

The fellowship coincides with the advanced year practicum placement.  

Has an identified interest in pursuing a career with the SUD population post-graduation.

 

Practicum Placements

Advanced year students will be assigned a BHWISE-SUDWE approved practicum placement where a large percentage of the population served are individuals with a substance use disorder. A diverse list of practicum placements specifically chosen and reserved for SUDWE fellows will be available for students to request their top three choices.

5. Submit your Advanced Practicum Application by the appropriate deadline.

6. End of Semester field evaluation (current students) or BSW practicum evaluation (incoming advanced standing students) 

SUDWE Reference Letter Applicants SHOULD NOT submit their own reference with their application materials.
