The Clinical Concentration provides education and practicum experiences that prepare graduates for the rapidly changing world of practice. Clinical social workers are licensed to provide a range of therapeutic services to children, adolescents, adults, and their families across multiple settings including schools, hospitals, behavioral health organizations, and child welfare agencies.

  • Advanced Year Clinical Practicum

    In the advanced year, the clinical practicum experience will provide intensive learning across over 400 settings throughout the region and abroad. Examples include in-patient and out-patient behavioral health facilities and community-based clinics; health care settings; departments of social service; child welfare settings; the Veterans Administration; social service; non-profits, court systems, employee assistance programs; and school settings. Students with a leadership, policy and social change sub concentration must take:

  • SPLC Methods Course 
  • Any course with a SWOA prefix
  • Licensure and Career Resources

    Students are eligible to apply to take the LMSW exam in Maryland once they have begun their final semester of the MSW program. For District of Columbia licensure, students must be within 90 days of graduation. Learn more about licensure resources and support offered at the UMSSW.
