Marcela Sarmiento Mellinger, MSW, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work, at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and also teaches in the MSW program. She earned a BA in Social Work from Millersville University, an MSW from Temple University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. Dr. Mellinger has over 15 years of teaching experience and has taught courses across the social work curriculum. As a practitioner, she worked as a systems advocate and an administrator. She has experience working with government administrators, the courts, legislators, and the community in determining social needs and developing strategies to raise awareness and bring about change. She also has extensive experience working with individuals impacted by intimate partner violence and in training practitioners and para-professionals who encounter survivors and victims in their work. Her main areas of research include advocacy, intimate partner violence, and social work education.
