Scholarship and Endowment Funds

Alison L. Richman Professorship for Children, Youth and Families – This professorship endowment fund was established by MSW ’84 alum Alison and her husband, Arnold Richman, to support the research of a renowned national leader in advancing research in the study of children, youth, and families.

Alison & Arnold Richman Dean's Fund for Innovations – This endowment fund was established by MSW ’84 alum Alison and her husband, Arnold Richman, to enable the Dean to pursue new or unanticipated opportunities that strengthen the School of Social Work.

Cook Civic Warrior Endowment for the School of Social Work – This endowment fund was established by The Fund for Change to support field placements for students in SWCOS.

The Dean's Fund for Innovations – This endowment fund was established by members of the Board of Advisors to honor the School’s 50^th Anniversary to provide support for faculty teaching and research activities and programs that bring visiting scholars and professionals to campus, and to enable the Dean to pursue new or unanticipated opportunities that strengthen the School.

Daniel Thursz Endowed Professorship in Social Justice – This professorship endowment fund was established by family, friends, and colleagues of School of Social Work former dean, Daniel Thursz, to support the research of the Thursz Professor.

Donna Harrington PhD Fellowship – This fellowship fund was established by friends and family members of School of Social Work former PhD Program Director Dr. Donna Harrington. This fund supports a doctoral student.

Financial Social Work Endowment – This endowment fund was established by MSW ’07 alum Meg Woodside and her husband, Sam, to support programmatic needs for the Financial Social Work Initiative.

Focused Solutions Endowment Fund – This endowment fund was established by MSW ’00 alum Janet Hosford-Lamb, the president and founder of Focused Solutions, LLC. This fund will provide programmatic support for the Behavioral Health and Well-being Lab (BHWell Lab).

Joseph Meyerhoff Memorial Endowment Fund – This endowment was established by The Joseph and Harvey Meyeroff Charitable Funds to support the Social Work Community Outreach Service (SWCOS). This gift also named the East Wing of the School in honor of Louis L. Kaplan, who was instrumental in the School being located in downtown Baltimore.

Dean Richard Barth Endowed Professorship – This professorship endowment fund was established by family, friends, and colleagues of School of Social Work former dean, Richard Barth, to support the research of a renowned national leader in children’s services.

Social Work Community Outreach Service (SWCOS) Endowment – This endowment fund was established by supporters of SWCOS, including Sue Wolman, in order to provide programmatic support for SWCOS.

Alison and Arnold Richman Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’84 alum Alison and her husband, Arnold Richman, to support a student who is committed to serve children and family through social work.

Alumni Association Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by the University of Maryland School of Social Work Alumni Association Board of Directors in 1992 to support an Advanced level social work student.

Barbara and Edward Brody Scholarship – This scholarship award was established by Edward J. Brody and his wife, Barbara, who is a licensed social worker and a former Adjunct Field Liaison and Clinical Instructor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work. This fund supports a social work student based on academic achievement.

Barbara Gold Orman Scholarship – This scholarship was established by MSW ’77 alum Barbara Orman to support a student interested in clinical social work.

Bernard “Bernie” E. Beidel Memorial Stipend - This award was established by Donna Beidel in memory of her husband, Bernie, to a social work student who is interested in a career in social work in the workplace and employee assistance.  

Betty and Leonard Golombek Scholarship – This scholarship was established by MSW ’65 alum the late Betty Golombek and her husband, the late Dr. Leonard Golombek, to support a student participating in SWCOS.

Board of Advisors Scholarship – established by the School of Social Work’s Board of Advisors to mark the School’s 50^th anniversary in 2011-2012, this fund provides scholarship awards for students based on academic achievement.

Bou Family International Scholarship – This scholarship was established by the Bou Family to support students with an interest in international social work.

Brittani “Bri” Brunn Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship was established by Melissa Benda in memory of her daughter, Brittani, to support a social work student pursuing a career with a clinical concentration in Behavioral Health and interest in suicide prevention.

Camille Baudot Wheeler Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by the late Camille Baudot Wheeler to support a student interested in pursuing a career in policy studies.

Danielle “Dani” Penland Raymond Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by Dr. Gregory Raymond, as well as friends and family members, in memory of Danielle “Dani” Penland Raymond. This fund supports a student pursuing a clinical social work degree and a student pursuing a management community organizing social work degree.

David and Alice Brainerd Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’79 alum David Brainerd and his wife, Alice, to support a social work student with an interest in child welfare.

Deans Lily Gold and Jesse J. Harris Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’96 alum Harry Miller in honor of former School of Social Work deans Lily Gold and Jesse Harris. This fund supports an in-state student pursuing studies in social work.

Dorothy C. Boyce Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’82 alum and former School of Social Work Board of Advisors member Dorothy Boyce to support students studying gerontological social work.

Evelyn Spiegel Swartz Memorial Fund – This fund was established to provide scholarship support for social work students.

Greif Family Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by the Greif family to support social work students based on academic achievement.

Professor Harry Chaiklin Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by the late Professor Harry Chaiklin and his family and friends to support students who have provided successful innovative practice in their previous experience with an organization, community, or on behalf of individuals, groups, or families.

James and Sylvia Earl Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by James and Sylvia Earl to support students participating in the Family Connections program, one of the four main pillars of SWCOS (Social Work Community Outreach Services), the community outreach unit in the School of Social Work

Jane Rodbell Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by Jane Rodbell, MSW ’84 to support social work students interested in working with children.

Jane Rodbell Scholarship Endowment for Parent University – This fund was established by MSW ’84 alum Jane Rodbell to support for students working in the Parent University program through Promise Heights.

Jean M. Dockhorn & Anne P. Hahn Scholarship – Jean Dockhorn was a hospital social worker who developed a hospital social work program at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Anne Hahn, MSW ’71, PhD ’86 began her hospital social work career when she was hired by Jean Dockhorn, and eventually focused her research and teaching on patient and families in medical crises. Dr. Hahn established this scholarship fund in memory of her mentor to support social work students who wish to study hospital social work.

Jeongseok Kong & Sunmi Jin Memorial PhD Fellowship – Jeongseok Kong was a doctoral candidate who passed away in a car accident with his wife, Sunmi. This fellowship fund was created in their memory by friends, family, and classmates, and will support the fellow’s education-related expenses.

Jennie Bloom Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established to support MSW students based on academic achievement.

Joan Levy Zlotnik, PhD ’98 Doctoral Fellowship – This doctoral fellowship was established by PhD ’98 alum and Board of Advisors member Joan Zlotnik to support doctoral students at the School of Social Work.

Jody Olsen Returning Peace Corps Volunteer Scholarship – This scholarship was established by Dr. Jody K. Olsen, MSW ’72 alum, to support a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in social work.

Joy S. & Ronald D. Paul Scholarship at Shady Grove – This scholarship fund was established by Joy, MSW ’94, and Ronald to support a MSW student enrolled at The Universities at Shady Grove with an interest in clinical social work.

Judith Schagrin, MSW ’79 and David Scher Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’79 alum Judith Schagrin and her husband, David Scher, to support social work students interested in child welfare.

Julie Oktay Scholarship in Oncology Social Work – This scholarship fund was established by Professor Emerita Dr. Julianne Oktay in order to support students pursuing oncology social work.

Katherine O’Donovan Scholarship Fund – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’81 alum and Board of Advisors member Katherine O’Donovan to support a social work student.

Kimberly Saunders Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by family, friends, and colleagues of the late Dr. Kimberly Saunders, who had served as the School of Social Work’s Associate Dean for Admissions. This fund will support social work students who demonstrate commitment to equity, justice, and inclusion.

Leontine Young Endowed Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established for students with an interest in child welfare.

LaFrance K. Muldrow Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by Ackneil M. Muldrow, III in memory of his mother, LaFrance, MSW ’76. This scholarship will assist social work students committed to young children and their families.

Professor Leonard Press Scholarship – This fund was established by the family, friends, and former students and colleagues of Professor Leonard Press, including Dr. Stanley Weinstein. This fund supports students with an interest in clinical social work.

Lipitz Family Scholarship Honoring Alison Richman, MSW ’84 – This scholarship fund was established by Roger and Flora Lipitz to support students with an interest in social justice.

Lois Blum Feinblatt Scholarship – Lois Blum Feinblatt (1922-2022) established this scholarship to support social work students with an interest in serving the LGBTQ+ population

Margery Singer Dannenberg Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by the family of Margery Singer Dannenberg for students who are interested in the prevention of intimate partner violence.

McCuan Family Trust Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by Jill McCuan, LaRee McCuan Siddiqqi, MSW ’11, and other family members of Patrick McCuan, former Assistant Dean of the School of Social Work. This fund supports a social work student committed to community organization and/or social policy development studies.

Mark Battle Scholarship in Nonprofit Management – This scholarship fund was established by the late Mark Battle, who was a former Director of the School’s Social Work Community Outreach Services (SWCOS) unit. This scholarship supports social work students interested in nonprofit management.

MedStar Health Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MedStar to support social work students.

Michael Allen Scholarship - This scholarship fund was established by Michael H. Allen, MSW ’03, to support a social work student pursuing a clinical social work degree with a focus on children and families.

Mimi Gibbs Piper Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’97 alum Mimi Gibbs Piper to support students with a background or interest in education.

Myrna Davidov Goldberg and Dr. Morton Falk Goldberg Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’69 alum Myrna Goldberg and her husband, Dr. Morton Goldberg, to support social work students based on academic achievement.

Nancy Dickinson Scholarship for Children and Families – This scholarship fund was established by School of Social Work former dean, Richard Barth, in honor of his wife, Dr. Nancy Dickinson, and her commitment to child welfare. This fund supports a social work student interested in working with children and families.

Oliver C. Harris Scholarship for the Prevention of Intimate Partner Violence – This scholarship fund was established by the late Dr. Harris’s widow, Dorothy Harris, and family and friends to support social work students who are committed to a career in preventing intimate partner violence.

Pamela and John Corckran Scholarship – This scholarship fund was established by MSW ’98 Pamela Corckran and her husband, John Corckran, to support social work students based on academic achievement.

Paul Ephross Scholarship in Social Work with Groups – This scholarship fund was established by the late Professor Emeritus Paul H. Ephross, his wife, Joan Weiss, and their family and friends. This fund will encourage students to creatively use groups in community-based practice.

Peace Corps Fellowship Endowment – This scholarship fund was established by Sue Wolman and other friends of the Social Work Community Outreach Service (SWCOS) to support a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer seeking a MSW program at the School of Social Work.

Richard Batterton Scholarship for Social Justice and Public Policy – This scholarship was established by Karin Batterton, Richard’s wife, in his memory and in honor of his commitment to policy work and to social justice. This scholarship supports social work students committed to public service in the nonprofit sector, city, county, or state agencies.

Resnick-Sollins Gerontological Scholarship – This scholarship was established by the former Chair of the School’s Board of Advisors, Howard Sollins, and his wife, Dr. Barbara Resnick, who focuses her nursing practice on gerontology. This fund supports students committed to gerontological social work.

Richard W. Friedman Scholarship for Juvenile or Criminal Justice – This scholarship was established by MSW ’67 alum Richard Friedman to support students who wish to pursue or further their career interests in juvenile or criminal justice.

Sandra Hess Scholarship in Community Practice – This scholarship was established by MSW ’78 alum Sandra Hess to support students participating in SWCOS with a demonstrated interest in community practice.

Sloane Francis, MSW ’97 Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship was established by Sloane’s mother, the late Vandy Rioux, in memory of her daughter, MSW ’97 alum Sloane Francis. This fund was established to support students whose area of study is related to working with children and families, particularly those that have physical or mental disabilities.

Stanley E. Weinstein, MSW, PhD Scholarship – This scholarship was established by MSW ’68 alum Dr. Stanley Weinstein and his wife, Janie, to support social work students interested in clinical social work.

Stanley Wenocur Scholarship in Community Organizing – This scholarship was established by Professor Emertus Stanley Wenocur and his family to support SWCOS students who are studying community organizing.

SunTrust Scholarship – This scholarship was established by SunTrust Bank (currently Truist Bank), with the assistance of MSW ’07 alum and Board of Advisors member Meg Woodside to support students pursuing a career in financial social work.

Susan Wolman Scholarship for Work with Children & Families – This scholarship was established by MSW ’79 alum Sue Wolman to support students completing their field internship through SWCOS in the field of clinical work with urban families and children.

Susan Zuravin PhD Scholarship – This scholarship was established by PhD ’02 alum Kelly Hyde in memory of her former doctoral mentor, Susan Zuravin. This fund provides scholarship support for a current PhD student.

Sylvia and Ephraim Lisansky Scholarship – This scholarship was established by the late Sylvia Lisansky, a MSW ’70 alum, to honor her husband, Ephraim’s, memory. This scholarship fund supports social work students based on academic achievement.

Sylvia Miller Nathanson Scholarship – Sylvia Miller Nathanson was a MSW ’77 alum and served as the School’s Director of Admissions. This fund was established by Sylvia’s daughters, Annette DeBois and Martha Nathanson, and her family members. This scholarship fund supports social work students who are attending the program part-time while working full-time, has dependents other than a spouse, or is a single parent.

Terrie Alexander Memorial Scholarship – MSW ’91 alum Lori James-Townes established this scholarship fund in memory of her aunt, Terrie Alexander, MSW ’12, with the assistance of family members and with Terrie’s former organization, Institutes for Behavior Resources, Inc. This scholarship supports students committed to a career in substance use intervention or prevention.

Virginia Lane Magladery and Sarah Magladery Lamont Scholarship – John Magladery established this scholarship in memory of his mother, Virginia, and his sister, Sarah. This fund supports social work students based on academic achievement.

Woodside Foundation Scholarship for Financial Social Work – This scholarship fund was established by the Woodside Foundation, thanks to trustees Margaret (MSW ’07 alum) and Samuel Woodside, to support students pursuing a social work degree with a focus in financial social work.
