Donna HarringtonThe Donna Harrington Fellowship Award recognizes the outstanding leadership and mentorship of Donna Harrington. This award supports the development of additional excellence among UMSSW PhD students.

This fellowship was designed to honor Dr. Harrington’s commitment to social work scholarship. This award will benefit future generations of UMSSW PhD students while keeping alive Donna Harrington’s name and extraordinary accomplishments.

Who is Eligible: Current UMSSW PhD students (Precandiacy)
Criteria: Essay(1-2 pages) brief description of the PhD student’s proposed research or leadership development activities; including an approximate cost; how the activity or project will further the PhD student’s excellence while complementing the student’s learning in the PhD program; how the activity or project may increase excellence in the UMSSW PhD program, School, University (UMB), or social work profession. The Jeongseok Kong & Sunmi Jin Memorial PhD Endowment

The Jeongseok Kong & Sunmi Jin

The Jeongseok Kong & Sunmi Jin Memorial PhD Endowment was created to provide grants for PhD students enrolled at the School to enhance their research agenda or skills. These grants help cover dissertation expenses, travel to educational conferences, or other education-related expenditures. Preference will be given to students who are enrolled at the School on F-1 student visas.

Application Date: Spring April 1
Amount: Up to $2000
Who is Eligible: PhD student at the UMSSW. Preference to F-1 Good academic standing according to UMB Graduate School policy
Criteria: 

1. Potential significance of the activity or project to develop or enhance the student’s research agenda or skills.

2. Preference will be given to PhD students who have not yet defended their dissertation proposal. Essay (1-2 pages)

A . A brief description of the PhD student’s proposed research activities; including approximate cost in budget justification sheet
B . A brief description of how the proposed research activities will enhance the student’s research agenda or skills while complementing the student’s learning in the PhD program
C. Current Academic Transcript

Dr. Kelly Hyde, PhD class of 2002, established the Susan J. Zuravin PhD Scholarship for a deserving PhD student in recognition of her professor and mentor, Dr. Zuravin.

Application Date: Spring April 1
Amount: $3000 ($1500 per semester Fall and Spring)
Who is Eligible: Interest in child welfare research and evaluation
Criteria: Two-page essay describing your interest in research and evaluation in child welfare and/or children’s behavioral health; current Academic Transcript

The Nikki R. Wooten Dissertation Award for Research with Military, Veterans, and Vulnerable Populations

Nikki WootonThe Nikki R. Wooten Dissertation Award for Research with Military, Veterans, and Vulnerable Populations The Nikki R. Wooten Dissertation Award for Research with Military, Veterans, and Vulnerable Populations (hereafter Wooten Dissertation Award) will provide a $1000 dissertation research award to doctoral candidates enrolled in the University of Maryland, School of Social Work Doctoral Program who are conducting dissertation research with military, veterans, or vulnerable populations. Research with military and veteran populations will be given preference and include any dissertation research involving military personnel, veterans, and their families as well as military social workers to improve the well-being of military personnel, veterans, and their families and/or advance military social work practice. Vulnerable populations will include the following populations: families living in poverty, families involved in the child welfare system, victims of trauma, substance abusers, uninsured/underinsured, and racial/ethnic minorities. Proposed research can utilize any research methodology (quantitative, qualitative, mixed, program evaluation) using primary or secondary data.

Grand Challenges SSW

With a generous allocation of funding from Grand Challenges Leadership Board Chair and Professor Rick Barth, we are excited to once again offer a competitive dissertation award to support “Research to Advance a Grand Challenge for Social Work and Society.” The selected awardee will receive up to $4,000 and will be connected to one of the Network Leads in their designated Grand Challenge.  

PhD candidates are invited to apply for this distinctive award by completing the Dissertation Award application and including a statement that demonstrates how their dissertation study addresses one of the #Challenges for Social Work.
